South-South Cooperation

Achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through Innovative South-South Cooperation

In September 2015, world leaders at the UN General Assembly adopted a declaration on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The 2030 Agenda reaffirmed the 2012 Rio +20 conference outcome document - The Future We Want - through which world leaders called on the UN system and other international organizations to support developing countries, particularly, the least developed countries in capacity-building for developing resource-efficient and inclusive economies by, among others, supporting North-South, South-South and Triangular Cooperation for the transition to a resource-efficient economy.

Speaking at a High-Level Round Table on South-South Cooperation during the Sustainable Development Summit which adopted the 2030 Agenda, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon said, “South-South Cooperation will play a key role in the implementation of 2030 Agenda and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals… replicating and adapting these examples through South-South and Triangular Cooperation can provide cost-effective and replicable solutions to the challenges faced by many developing countries.”

As articulated in SDG 17, South-South Cooperation is an important element to “strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development,” and help developing countries to take transformative and collective steps to leapfrog into the sustainable and resilient path that will leave no one behind. The 70th General Assembly (GA) also adopted the resolution on South-South and Triangular Cooperation that requested continued integration of South-South and Triangular Cooperation in the UN system. It urged the UN system to “continue its support to regional and sub-regional organizations, enabling their member states to build more partnerships and cross-border frameworks, with a view to promoting and scaling up best practices in South-South and Triangular Cooperation with the potential to benefit a large number of developing countries.”
