ARGeo 2015 HIGHLIGHTS

- In addition to the two successfully completed projects in Kenya (Silali) and Ethiopia (Tendaho) in the year 2014, UNEP ARGeo started projects of surface exploration studies in other three geothermal prospects: Eritrea (Alid), Tanzania (Ngozi) and Uganda (Kibiro) in 2015.

- UNEP provisioned various geo-scientic equipment and hired three Senior Geothermal Consultants (Geologist, Geochemist and Geophysicist) to successfully implement these three projects. It is planned to complete at least two of the three projects by third quarter of 2016 for submission to the AUC-KfW Geothermal Risk Mitigation Facility (GRMF) and other developers for further investment.

      • (b) the Report on Skill Gap Audit and Analysis in the East Africa Region prepared by UNEP through the ARGeo project.
    3. Awareness creation :
      • - UNEP ARGeo has started to provide support and guidance to the Government of Ethiopia (GOE) in preparation and organization of the Six African Rift Geothermal Conference (ARGeo C-6).
    1. Capacity Building :
    2. Strengthened the capacities of the region in terms of developing a conceptual model of geothermal system using a Leapfrog software.
    3. Policy Advice :
    4. Provided technical support and Policy advice to Uganda (in collaboration with CTCN) to develop geothermal policy, legislation and regulatory framework..
    • - Developed a social media strategy through twitter and facebook as a tool for information dissemination for ARGeo and other regional geothermal related news.
    • - Enhanced the ARGeo website to make it more dynamic and interractive, while keeping the information relevant and up to date.
    • - Enhanced Africa Geothermal Inventory Database to Web GIS..
    • Develop conceptual models of the geothermal systems in Kibiro (Uganda), Ngozi (Tanzania), Alid (Eritrea) with location of targets for deep exploration drilling
    • Create a better understanding of geologic and geodynamic evolution of the Western Branch of the EARS through organization of a Technical Workshop for the Western Branch of the greater EARS Region
    • Spur geothermal interest, strengthen geothermal capacities, and enhance partnership and regional networking through one of the ARGeo biennial conferences ARGeo C-6.
    • Continue to provide technical support in setting up and operation of the Africa Geothermal Centre of Excellence (AGCE)
